Congratulations to the following CANSCAIP members who are award winners and nominees:

Finalists for the 2013 BC Book Prizes

The West Coast Book Prize Society has announced the finalists for the 2013 BC Book Prizes. The winners will be announced in May in Victoria.

The Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize is awarded to the author of novels, including chapter books, aimed at juveniles and young adults, as well as non-fiction books for children (including biography) which have not been highly illustrated. The author must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the past five years. Titles by CANSCAIPers include:

  • Middle of Nowhere, written by Caroline Adderson,  Groundwood Books
  • The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen, written by Susin Nielsen, Tundra Books
  • Seraphina, written by Rachel Hartman, Doubleday Canada

The Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize is awarded to the author and illustrator of picture books and illustrated non-fiction books. The prize is shared by the author and the illustrator. The author and/or illustrator must be a B.C./Yukon resident or have lived in B.C. or the Yukon for three of the past five years. Titles by CANSCAIPers include:

  • Gift Days, written by Kari-Lynn Winters and illustrated by Stephen Taylor, Fitzhenry & Whiteside
  • Hey Canada!, written by Vivien Bowers and illustrated by Milan Pavlovic, Tundra Books
  • What’s Up, Bear? A Book About Opposites, written by Frieda Wishinsky and illustrated by Sean L. Moore, Owlkids Books Inc.

Shortlists Announced for the 2013 Atlantic Book Awards

The Atlantic Book Awards Society announced the shortlist for the ten different book prizes that make up the 2013 Atlantic Book Awards. Winners of the 2013 Atlantic Book Awards will be announced at a special awards show in May in Dartmouth. Titles by CANSCAIPers include:

Ann Connor Brimer Award for Children’s Literature

  • Enemy Territory, written by Sharon E. McKay, Annick Press

Lillian Shepherd Award for Excellence in Illustration

  • I is for Island: A Prince Edward Island Alphabet, illustrated by Brenda Jones, written by Hugh MacDonald, Sleeping Bear Press

2012 Science in Society Book Awards

The Canadian Science Writers’ Association (CSWA) is pleased to announce the shortlist for children’s books published in Canada in 2012 and entered in the national Science in Society Book Awards competition. The award carries a $1,000 prize value. The winner will be announced mid-April. Titles by CANSCAIPers include:

  • Big Green Book of the Big Blue Sea, written by Helaine Becker, illustrated by Willow Dawson, Kids Can Press
  • Earth Friendly Buildings, Bridges and More: The Eco-Journal of Corry Lapont, written by Etta Kaner, illustrated by Stephen MacEachern, Kids Can Press
  • The World in Your Lunchbox: The Wacky History and Weird Science of Everyday Foods, written by Claire Eamer, illustrated by Sa Boothroyd, Annick Press

2013 Short List for Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards

The 2013 short list for the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards was announced. The two awards, of $6,000 each, recognize artistic excellence in writing and illustration in English-language Canadian children’s literature. The winners will be announced on May 23.

  • Larf, written by Ashley Spires, Kids Can Press

2013 TD Grade One Book Giveaway Selection

The Canadian Children’s Book Centre is thrilled to announce the title of the 2013 TD Grade One Book Giveaway. Over 500,000 copies of Boy Soup, written by Loris Lesynski and illustrated by Michael Martchenko will be distributed to Grade One students in schools across the country this fall.
