Bio
Jan lives down the end of the road on a lake about an hour's drive from Ottawa. A storyteller as well as a writer, she has given readings and workshops, and performed at festivals for adults and young people across the country, in Australia, the US and the UK. Her work comes out of a conviction that we can all find within ourselves everything we need to manage. She writes and tells about the times of struggle and darkness but also about creating the way through to change and hope. She has a particular love for the traditional folk and fairy tales and this love has now come creeping into her books—some of which have recently been taking a distinctly humorous turn (to the point of inspiring reader belly-laughs). She takes delight in meeting readers and listeners and gives performances which have a spell-binding quality that seems to open doors.

Also a passionate advocate and administrator for the arts, Jan was the first National Coordinator of Storytellers of Canada/Conteurs du Canada and directed the organization's StorySave project for a number of years. She has directed two storytelling series (one at the Fourth Stage of the National Arts Centre), is co-founder of the Eastern Ontario arts education organization MASC, and of the production company Two Women Productions (2WP).

Spare time finds her outdoors: cross-country skiing, gardening, rock climbing, hiking or canoeing.

Jan was born in England but is certain that Canada is home. She has two children and three step-children, all adults. Her partner, Jennifer Cayley, is also a storyteller and colluder in arts dreams and schemes.
