Biography

Before writing children's books, Dan Bar-el had always been writing in one form or another, whether it was plays and monologues, poetry, comedy sketches, routines and jokes, film scripts, greeting cards, or the thousand little scraps of paper he would leave around the house. Writing is just something he had always done.

Yet at first, he never saw himself becoming a writer. At age ten, Dan discovered that he loved theatre and he loved acting. Up until the end of high school, he was devoted to theatre, constantly involved in classes and productions outside of regular school. Then he attended the Ryerson Theatre School for three years before embarking on a professional acting career. During that period, Dan formed a writing partnership with a comic performer and together they started a comedy troupe that toured across Canada.

It was through volunteering at an out-of-school program that he discovered how much he enjoyed working with children. From then on, Dan shifted his focus to running creative programming for school age children and later, becoming an early childhood educator. And that’s how he came to writing children’s books.

Dan did not always read "age-appropriate" books when he was young, so it didn’t surprise him to rediscover a love for picture books when he was an adult. What did surprise him was finding a new focus for writing that complimented his other pursuits. Dan now balances his writing time between touring as an author and storyteller, and facilitating a preschooler program in which children’s stories are recorded and acted out with classmates.

Dan loves to travel and is grateful for the opportunities that being an author and storyteller gives him to visit new places in Canada. Through his companion, Dominique, he has also become intimate with much of France, and in particular to the small village where she grew up.

Dan relishes any opportunity to host meals or bake desserts, as well as taking photographs. He plays blues harmonica and is currently learning to master the penny whistle. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, grew up in London, Ontario, and lived for many years in Toronto before moving to Vancouver where he currently resides.
