Biography

Ron Broda was born in New Hamburg, Ontario - the sixth of eleven children. Ron received his formal art training at Conestoga College, followed by many years in advertising and design. During these years, he began exploring a unique medium for expressing his art, and is now an accomplished, self-taught, "paper sculpture" artist. These three-dimensional pieces are enhanced with water colour and other "trade secrets" to produce finished works of art that have beauty and depth. Meticulous attention to detail enhances the life-like quality of every piece. Ron has produced work for such distinguished clients as National Geographic, Coca-cola, Chrysler and many others. For the past 15 years, Ron has been applying this technique to Children's literature, with "The Little Crooked Christmas Tree" being one of his earlier favorites. It has since become a Christmas classic - televised world wide every holiday season, and highlighted by the spirited narration of Chris topher Plummer! Ron is the Director of Discovery House Museum in Sarnia, and keeps busy creating and combining exhibits that feature related art classes for school children of all ages! In his spare time, Ron is married and kept on the go with 3 children and a Great Dane.

Ron's childhood and subsequent school years were a painful struggle that resulted in failed grades and low self esteem. It was not until he was married with young children of his own, that he was diagnosed with A.D.D. and Learning Disabilities. In retrospect - this explained a lot! It took the encouragement and compassion from an intuative teacher to persuade Ron to pursue his talent in art! Teachers will appreciate Ron's presentations, as they are "tailored" to fit the needs of their students, often including hands-on activities. He also talks about his own learning challenges, and how he overcame them through perserverence, and "finding your own genius". Ron's informal and engaging manner of speaking, combined with his love of children and children's literature, captures the interests of even the most withdrawn students. He has a unique ability to relate to, inspire and motivate students - especially those that struggle academically. Ron visits schools across the province as well as making special appearances at the Eastern Horizons Literacy Conference in Newfoundland in 2003.
