Biography

I am a storyteller and visual artist who has performed at storytelling and folk festivals in Winnipeg, Toronto, Whitehorse, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Edmonton. For many years,I worked as a teacher in the public school system, and more recently, have left that behind me to concentrate on my work as a storyteller and visual artist full time. I hold degrees in Arts, Education and Fine Arts and have extensive classroom, workshop, and performance experience with children and adults. My paintings and prints have been exhibited at group and juried shows in Winnipeg, Ottawa, the Internet, and Barcelona, Spain.

Although I was born in Toronto, I consider myself a prairie chicken, having lived most of my life in Winnipeg. I heard many stories in my own extended family, and I am most familiar with the folktales of the British Isles and Northern Europe. In my performances and workshops I like to link personal/family stories with folktale and myth.

Storytelling is both an art form and a way of encouraging a sense of community among people of all ages, and I believe in the sacredness of all stories. Gathering people together to share their stories is an important part of my work and has taken me into group homes for young offenders, adult survivor groups , and classes for seniors. I have also been working for the last 8 years as a visiting artist in the Artist-in-the-Schools program in M.anitoba, where I combine telling stories and making art with the students.

I am also been a member of the band "The Fine Companions", playing music for folk dancing and listening on hammered dulcimer, guitar, and percussion. I often play the drum or dulcimer, and sing during my storytelling.
