Born: October, 1953. New Dehli, India
Husband, Ian; two grown daughters

Biography

Rachna was born in India, and lived in Bombay until the age of fourteen, when her family moved to London, England. Books were always a source of delight, solace and inspiration and Rachna was strongly influenced by characters in books who wrote, such as Anne, who scribbled stories in Anne of Green Gables, and Jo in Little Women.

Despite the appeal and tug of writing, Rachna spent years bumping into dead ends as she wandered the labyrinth of trying to find a “real” job. After graduating with a B.Sc. in biology, from King’s College, University of London, she came to Canada, where she obtained a B.Ed, got married and had children. She continued to dream of writing, and finally, at the age of thirty, managed to jerk past the inertia of avoidance, and steadily plark (play, work, lark) with words.

Her first book was published in 1988 and she has never looked back. Rachna is now the author of numerous critically acclaimed children’s picture books, early readers, middle-grade and young-adult novels with multiple honours and awards, including the Governor General’s Literary Award for Children’s Literature in 1999. She also writes adult fiction under the pseudonym, Rachna Mara.

Rachna’s books have been translated into several languages, including French, German, Danish, Spanish, Catalan, Korean, as well as many other dual editions. She has given readings, writing workshops and conference presentations to students, teachers and aspiring writers across the country, as well as internationally.

Rachna currently lives in Ottawa where she continues to dream up weird and wonder-filled tales.
