Born: 11 February, 1942. Durban, South Africa BiographyMerle has always been fascinated with the oral tradition and loved listening to stories. In 1972, as a new mother in a new country, she found herself remembering her childhood in Rhodesia and how African parents used storytelling rather than ecturing with their children, and falling back on this tradition to raise their sons. She has been a freelance, professional storyteller for twelve years, and one of two resident storytellers at Fort Edmonton Park from May to the end of August each year. Since 1995 she has toured with the Young Alberta Book Society Chrysalis Festival, telling stories to children in schools and libraries across the province, and has been involved withYouthWrite, a summer writing camp for 12 to 18 year olds, where she conducts storytelling workshops. She was given permission to start the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program in Edmonton in 1994. This programme introduces nursery rhymes and storytelling to high risk and English-as-a-second language parents and child caregivers.
