Biography

I came to Calgary for one year with my husband in 1973. We arrived in late September and Calgary was in the middle of a cold snap. I wore all my winter clothes and wondered how I'd survive the year. After a few days, of course, it warmed up. When winter really arrived we went skiing and I learned to dress in layers to keep warm. By spring, we were enjoying Calgary so much that we decided to make Canada our permanent home.

I didn't know then that I wanted to be a writer. This came later after our first child was born. My husband was working half the time in Oklahoma City so my daughter and I often went with him. July and August afternoons were very sunny and hot. When we went outside my daughter broke out into heat rashes. So in the afternoons we stayed in our air-conditioned apartment and read a lot. Some of the books we read were wonderful. Others were not. I changed the words as I read them aloud because I didn't want my daughter, who couldn't speak yet, to learn such horrible English. That's when I decided to become a writer.
