Biography

Deborah Hodge is the award-winning author of 23 books for children including: picture books, Canadian history books, and wildlife, science and nature books.

Her history book, The Kids Book of Canada's Railway and How the CPR was Built, won the Information Book Award of Canada. Her picture book, Lily and the Mixed-up Letters, was named an Outstanding Book for Young People with Disabilities by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People).

Deborah is the creator of the popular Kids Can Press Wildlife Series and the author of the first eight books in the series. She is also the creator of the new Who Lives Here? series, published by Kids Can Press.

Deborah likes to write about things that matter to kids: wild animals, bugs, families, school, the experience of being a new immigrant, and finding your place in the world. She specializes in writing for the younger set (the picture book audience and primary aged children) and loves the interplay between text and images. She also enjoys the challenge of using few words to explain big thoughts.

Deborah's books have been published in numerous countries including Canada, United States, Spain, Mexico and Indonesia and have been translated into French, Indonesian and Spanish. Before becoming an author, Deborah was a primary school teacher, then a curriculum writer, editor and instructional designer for the British Columbia Ministry of Education.

Today, she works as a full-time writer and as a speaker at conferences, schools and universities. She says, "Although I'm not teaching any more, I still feel like I'm talking to my students whenever I write a book. I love the challenge of trying to create something that young readers will find interesting."
