Born: July 8, 1958, St. Catharines, Ontario BiographyLorna Schultz Nicholson has been a television co-host and reporter, radio host and reporter, community theatre actor, murder mystery actor, fitness coordinator and rowing coach. She was also a member of the Canadian National Rowing Team way back when, before children. Now she is a full-time writer. Her first children's hockey novel, Interference, was published in 2004 and since then she's written seven more as she has grown extremely fond of her characters. Lately, she has also tried her pen at writing non-fiction which has proven to be an incredibly enjoyable experience. Along with her published books she also has many other projects that are looking for homes, including a first reader dance novel, an historical young adult novel and a young adult hockey novel. Lorna lives in Calgary, Alberta with her husband Bob Nicholson (who is the Pres. of Hockey Canada), three wonderful teenagers, two not-so-obedient dogs and one very lazy cat. Published Works

Coming Soon: Mystery Novel - See Fox Run (not a children's novel) AwardsCanadian Children's Book Centre - Interference Other MembershipsYoung Alberta Book Society, Writers Guild of Alberta, Canadian Children's Book Center, Alexandra Writers' Centre Available ForLorna's presentations and workshops are lively and fun and can be altered to fit the age the group. She can present to all ages, is open to groups of 100 and is definitely open to travel. Along with talking about her favourite subject- writing- she can also bring and wear her Hockey Canada signed jersey and tell stories about attending the Olympics and other hockey championships. K-2 - Lorna will read then discuss her characters, their conflicts, and work with the students on story comprehension. Using her characters she will talk with students about family and friend dynamics and how to resolve conflicts. Grades 3-8 - Lorna will read then talk about her characters relationship choices. Then she'll discuss the process of getting a book published. How she goes from idea to finished product, including edting, editing and editing. High School Classes - Lorna will deal mainly with editing but will also talk about the development of a story and how she goes from one little idea to a finished book. She will also discuss editing and research techniques. This presentation can be tailored for fiction or non-fiction. A question and answer period will end all visits. All questions will be answered including any hockey questions. The only question she won't answer is "How Old Are You?"
Workshops (grades K-12, adults)Creative Writing - Let's take an idea and somehow make it into a story. This workshop is hands on and helps the students to think first about setting the their stories. If time permits students will move into character and plot development. Creating Cool Characters - Let's develop some cool characters through an interactive workshop. Lorna brings a suitcase full of costumes and students get to put them on and pretend to be a character. Then the class will work together to write sentences to describe the characters. Emphasis is on creating a picture using active descriptiom. Lights, Camera, Action Words - Lorna will bring her suitcase full of costumes and students will get to perform different scenes. After performing, students will write sentences that are filled with action words. They will learn how to use verbs to make active sentences. Mystery Writing - This hands on workshop is all about the Who-dunnit. Emphasis will be on developing the main sleuth and his/her supporting cast. Plus, Lorna will work on the pacing of a mystery story and adding red herrings to make it a plausible mystery that will keep readers guessing. |
