Biography

Marjorie Blain Parker was born in Edmonton, Alberta, her mother's hometown. But in 1967 the family moved to Calgary - her father's hometown. Mrs. Blain was a language arts teacher, and from an early age Marjorie and her brothers and sister were all encouraged to read, read, read.

Marjorie started writing at an early age too. In grade 3 her very first poem was published in the school bulletin and won a ribbon. It was a heady moment and she was hooked! Marjorie continued to write throughout school and university, but never got serious about it until she was MUCH older.

In the meantime, she grew up in Calgary, did a lot of skiing, spent summers in Windermere, BC, and traveled a lot with her friends - to Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Europe, Russia and Africa. Marjorie earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1982 from the University of Calgary. She wasn't much interested in business, but one of her professors promised her she'd be guaranteed good-paying jobs. Young and easily corrupted, Marjorie had visions of her own apartment and more trips!

Upon graduation Marjorie got a, then prestigious, job at Arthur Andersen. She was soon sent to Denver, Colorado for a 6-month assignment. While there she met her future husband, Jay - but they only dated for a couple of months before she went back to Calgary. After an expensive, three-year, long-distance romance Jay finally proposed. They got married in 1986 in Calgary and moved to Denver three days later.

On a whim, Marjorie took a correspondence class in children's literature, and started writing again. After having numerous stories and poems published in children's magazines she considered focusing her efforts on the children's book market. Many years and three children later, Marjorie actually got going on it.

Now that the kids are all in school, and she finally got laid off from her computer job, Marjorie writes full-time and couldn't be more pleased with herself. When not writing Marjorie enjoys spending time with her family, non-extreme activities like walking, hiking, pilates, reading, movies, going out for dinner and, most of all, visiting friends and family in Calgary!
