Biography

Born and raised in the US, I came to Canada in 1972 as part of the "back to the land" movement. As part of a commune, I settled in the West Kootenays of BC, built a cabin, grew a garden, raised honeybees and burned wood for heat. I started writing--probably not coincidentally--the same year my first child was born. Before that, I had been a special education teacher, a primary teacher, an environmental educator and a dancer in Question of Balance Dance Theatre. After starting as an educational writer, I switched to writing fiction for children and discovered what I was meant to do.
