127 York Street
Born: November 20. Toronto, ON BiographyJanet Wilson has finally figured out what she wants to be when she grows up twenty years after illustrating her first picture book, Daniel's Dog. The latest non-fiction book she has created One Peace: True Stories of Young Activists (Orca October 2008) combines her passions for social justice, portraiture, writing and research. One Peace is a lavishly illustrated collection of inspirational real-life accounts of the power of children enhanced with artwork, poetry and photographs. Inspired by the philosophy of Gandhi—"To reach peace we must begin with the children"—Janet is creating a series of books that will motivate children to make a difference and "be the change they wish to see in the world". She's taking this powerful message to schools, libraries and conferences with a digital slide presentation. Janet Wilson is also passionate about helping young people to draw. She believes that there is a crucial stage in the mid-elementary grades when basic instruction and encouragement helps students evolve their drawings from two dimensions into the third. Without this guidance, many frustrated children lacking confidence give up drawing forever. An award-winning artist and a published author, with over 50 books for young people, Janet's representational style and sensitivity to the nuances of facial expressions helps young readers grasp subjects ranging from dealing with loss, the arrival of a new baby, the tragedy of war or the awe and wonder of nature.
