Born: May 29, 1935. Toronto, ON BiographyMary Woodbury was born in Toronto before the Second World War. She taught elementary school, married her childhood sweetheart and stayed home to raise a family. She started writing poetry while her sons napped. She took extension and summer courses in creative writing from some of Canada's best writers. Gradually she learned the craft and found the time to devote herself more and more to writing. Her first children's novel was published in 1989, the same year she became a grandmother. Both events were thrilling. The family settled in Edmonton, Alberta in 1979 after living in many cities in Canada, the US and Italy. Author Mary Woodbury has had short stories and poetry both published in recognized literary journals and broadcast over CBC over the last thirty years. Recently her short story, Not in Front of the Virgin was included in Divine Realms, an anthology of speculative fiction edited by Susan McGregor and published by Turnstone Press. In 1999 she was privileged to be sent to Montreal and Quebec City as part of the Canadian Children's Book Centre Author Tour. Most of her juvenile novels have been listed in the Our Choice catalogue and shortlisted for several awards. Currently Jess and the Runaway Grandpa is on the Manitoba Reader's Choice list for 1999. Currently Mary Woodbury writes, teaches writing, visits schools and libraries and works part-time as the publisher of Hodgepog Books. She spends as much time as possible with her family, especially her grandchildren and her dog Rosie who loves long walks either at home or in their country woods near Athabasca.
