Bio
Philip Roy was born and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He studied music and history before choosing a career in writing. His love for the ocean, enjoyment of travelling, and fascination for submarines has led to the creation of the Submarine Outlaw series (SOS). These are tales of high adventure on the seas and waterways of the world, but also involve mythology, geography, ecology, invention and an embracing love of people, places, animals and things. The Submarine Outlaw series details the adventures of a young submariner, Alfred Pynsent, and his quirky crew of a dog and a seagull, as they circumnavigate the world. The series includes the following six books: Submarine Outlaw, Journey to Atlantis, River Odyssey, Ghosts of the Pacific, Outlaw in India, Seas of South Africa and Eco Warrior (Ronsdale Press). Philip’s eighth novel in the Submarine Outlaw series, Stealth of the Ninja, will be published in the spring of 2016. He has also published two works of historical fiction, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg and Me & Mr. Bell (Cape Breton University Press). Blood Brothers in Louisbourg focuses on the story of two adolescent brothers, one of French origins, and the other of Mik’maw and French descent, as they face the siege of Louisbourg in 1745. Blood Brothers in Louisbourg, or Frères de sang à Louisbourg has also been translated by Christian Roy (no relation to Philip), into French (Les Éditions Perce-Neige). Me & Mr. Bell is about a ten-year-old boy struggling with dyslexia who befriends Alexander Graham Bell and Helen Keller in 1908 (Cape Breton University Press). Me & Mr. Bell received several major nominations, including a Silver Birch nomination, the Canadian Library Association nomination for Best Book of the Year for Children in 2014, and a Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People nomination (Cape Breton University Press). Philip has also recently published his first two picture books in the Happy the Pocket Mouse series, Mouse Tales, and Jellybean Mouse, illustrated by Andrea Torrey Balsara (Ronsdale Press). The third book in the series, Mouse Pet, is currently being illustrated, and will be available in the fall of 2015. Philip has written 27 stories in the Happy the Pocket Mouse series thus far, and shares them with audiences of all ages. When Philip is not travelling and visiting schools, he spends his time with his wonderful and growing family in Durham, Ontario, where he continues to write novels and compose music.
