PANEL: Illustrating Your Own Words for the First Time
Ashley Barron, Kate Parkinson and Farida Zaman illustrated for other writers before they illustrated stories they'd written themselves. These talented illustrators talk about their choices and challenges of being a first-time author/illustrator of their own books.
ASHLEY BARRON uses cut-paper collage, watercolour, acrylic and pencil crayon. Her work has been described as unique and intricate … a visual feast of colour, textures and shapes. LOVE YOU HEAD TO TOE (Owlkids, 2019) is filled with bright, playful illustrations of babies and animals engaged in similar behavior: babies stretch their limbs like sea stars, splash like ducklings, toddle like bear cubs, and fill their chubby cheeks like chipmunks.
KATE PARKINSON’s digitally manipulated pen-and-ink illustrations have been called lively and expressive. GRACE (Holiday House, 2015) is about a girl who wants to be a dancer but ballet just isn't her forte. However art is something Grace is good at, and it enables her find a way to be part of the ballet class. And on top of that, she can still continue to dance just for the love of it. The text is simple enough for emerging readers to tackle successfully.
FARIDA ZAMAN is known for her upbeat, colourful, and whimsical style. She works primarily in acrylics, often mixing in elements of collage. I WANT TO BE... A GUTSY GIRLS' ABC (Second Story Press, 2020) is an alphabet of fun and unusual possibilities for when you grow up. This ABC explores some of the amazing and often unusual jobs people do. Each letter has an illustration of a girl who shows us how we can be, quite literally, anything we want to be.

TRANSIT & PARKING: From Eglinton station on the Yonge subway line, walk 1 block N on Yonge to Orchard View. The closest parking (expensive) is Yonge-Eglinton Centre's underground lot with an entrance on Orchard View. There are Green P parking lots on Erskine, Castlefield and Sherwood.
