    Whispered Words is an open-genre, open-form prose competition run by the Writers’ Community of Durham Region. The $1000 first prize includes publication in the Whispered Words literary anthology. The $400 second prize winner, $200 third place winner and selected honourable mentions will also be published in the anthology. All published entries receive a $25 payment and a contributor’s copy, and every entry receives written feedback from the judges. The maximum word count is 1000 words. The entry fee is just $20 Canadian – $25 for international entries.

    Whispered Words is also running a cover design contest. The prize is $150, publication on the cover of the Whispered Words anthology, plus a contributor’s copy. Entry fee is $5 Canadian.

    Both contests close November 30, 2011. Winners will be announced in March 2012. Online submissions only.     The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild will be holding a Winter Retreat at St Peter’s Abbey February 3-24, 2012. Cost is $300 per week for Saskatchewan Writers' Guild or CARFAC SASK members (Saskatchewan Residents), $475 (Out of Province residents, members of SWG or CARFAC SASK ) or $550 per week (Out of Province residents, non-members of SWG or CARFAC SASK).     Due to unforeseeable circumstances, Loris Lesynski cannot deliver the Keynote Address at CANSCAIP’s Packaging Your Imagination 2011 conference on November 5th.

    Please join me in welcoming author Kathy Stinson, who will share her insights as Keynote Speaker.

    Kathy Stinson is the renowned author of more than 30 titles for children, including picture books, young adult novels, historical fiction, horror, short stories, biography, and other non-fiction. Her triumphs include the classic picture book Red Is Best as well as her recent non-fiction title Highway of Heroes, which was nominated for the Ontario Library Association's 2012 Silver Birch Award. Kathy is also a dedicated workshop leader, working with writers in Liberia as well as in every province and territory of Canada.

    Kathy has titled her talk: "An Intimate Examination of Sock Fluff."

    The Canadian Science Writers’ Association offers two $1,000 annual book awards to honor outstanding contributions to science writing 1) intended for and available to children/middle grades ages 8-12 years, and 2) intended for and available to the general public.

    Competitors must be Canadian citizens or residents of Canada, but need not be members of the CSWA. Entries, in either French or English, must have been published during the 2011 calendar year. Short lists in all categories will be announced in March 2012, with the presentation to the winners taking place at the CSWA Awards Banquet in June 2012.

    Science et société Prix du livre 2011 – date limite 15 décembre 2011

    L’Association canadienne des rédacteurs scientifiques offre deux prix annuels de 1000 $ chacun pour des ouvrages scientifiques exceptionnels destinés et distribués 1) aux enfants, et 2) au grand public.

    Les candidats et candidates doivent être Canadiens ou résidents du Canada, mais ils n’ont pas besoin d’être membres de l’ACRS. Il faut que les ouvrages soumis, en anglais ou en français, aient été publiés au Canada pendant l’année civile 2011. L’Association présentera la liste des finalistes de chaque catégorie en mars 2012, et la remise des prix se fera au cours du banquet de l`ACRS juin 2012.
