Benefits of Membership

Members

CANSCAIP Members are traditionally published*  authors or illustrators, and professional performers* for children or teens.

*What is traditionally published?  Publication in print or e-book through a recognized Canadian publisher or international publisher is considered as eligibility to be a CANSCAIP Member.

Traditional publishers cover the costs of editing, design, illustration, printing, marketing, sales and distribution—creators don't pay for their books to be published.  Traditional publishers also pay creators through advances against royalties, and royalties on sales.

*What is a professional performer?  Performers, including storytellers, who are paid at a professional standard for their performances children or teens in classrooms, libraries and other venues.

Friends

CANSCAIP's Friend membership is open to unpublished, self-published*, and aspiring children's authors and illustrators, and amateur children's performers. CANSCAIP Friends also include teachers, librarians, publishers, journalists and many others interested in kids books.

*What is self-published?  Self-published authors or hybrid-published authors pay for some or all of the costs of producing their books.  Requiring authors to pay for their books to be produced is a key difference between self-publishing and traditional publishing.  Self-publishing includes companies that offer services to self-published authors, hybrid publishing companies,  and sole-proprietorship companies.

Why doesn't CANSCAIP accept self-published authors/illustrators as Members?

This ruling may seem somewhat unfair toward self-published creators, especially with today's improved self-publishing technology. Unfortunately, CANSCAIP lacks the resources to individually assess a candidate's work. Getting published by a recognized publisher or distributed by a recognized distributor is a reasonably objective benchmark of production and (especially) editorial quality.

Self-published creators are welcome to join as Friends of CANSCAIP.
