Benefits of Membership

Members

CANSCAIP Members are traditionally published*  authors or illustrators, or professional performers* for children or teens.

*What is traditionally published?  Publication in print or e-book through a recognized Canadian publisher or international publisher is considered as eligibility to be a CANSCAIP Member.

Traditional publishers don't charge creators to publish their books.  A traditional publisher covers all the costs of publishing a book—editing, design, illustration, printing, marketing, sales and distribution. As well, traditional publishers pay the creator through an advance against royalties, and then pay royalities on copies sold.

*What is a professional performer?  Performers, including storytellers, who are paid at a professional standard for their performances children or teens in classrooms, libraries and other venues.

Friends

Friend membership is open to unpublished or aspiring children's authors or illustrators, or amateur performers. Self-published authors or illustrators, including with hybrid publishing companies and sole-proprietorship companies are welcome to be a CANSCAIP Friend.

Self-published or hybrid-published authors usually pay the companies for some or all of the costs of producing their books.  This requirement for payment from creators is a key difference between these companies and traditional publishers.
