Steering Clear of Stereotypes: A Diversified Approach to Writing LGBTQ+ Characters: This webinar, first and foremost, is not about what you can and cannot write. The goal is to consider inclusivity and diversity in literature for young readers and to examine problematic tropes and stereotypes. We will also explore resources and tools that can help authors ensure nuanced and complex representation related to LGBTQ+ characters, including the work of sensitivity readers and consultants. Attendees can expect to come away with a more thorough understanding of current conversations around authenticity in representation, existing stereotypes and overused tropes.

Rob Bittner has a PhD in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies (SFU), and an MA in the Children’s Literature program at UBC in Vancouver. He loves reading a wide range of literature, but particularly stories with diverse depictions of gender and sexuality.
