CANSCAIP and the Humber School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) present our inaugural

PYI Get Published Bootcamp!

A CANSCAIP-focused version of
The Insider's Guide to Getting Published

Canada's oldest and largest conference for building the craft and business of writing, illustrating and performing children's culture has teamed up with Humber to bring CANSCAIPers a specialized PYI follow-up workshop on getting published in the world of children's literature.

Cynthia Good has led her Insider's Guide to Getting Published for thousands of aspiring and established authors, and together with children's publishing expert Vikki VanSickle, they will lead you on a special one-day, highly focused bootcamp for CANSCAIPers looking for a current industry overview backed up by the concrete steps you need to take to get your children's projects published.

Who will benefit most? This workshop is for CANSCAIPers who have yet to be published, as well as for those who have a completed manuscript ready to go out to market. Learn how to get published, and how to market yourself effectively.

During the first three hours of this workshop the speakers will cover the following:
  • an update on issues in Canadian publishing.
  • effective query letters and proposals.
  • self publishing.

The afternoon session will include:
  • the benefits of an online writing community.
  • effective use of social media.
  • time management (writing life versus promotional life).
  • brand management. (Does your image say what you want it to?)

Cynthia Good
is a former president and publisher of Penguin Canada and the current director of Humber's Creative Book Publishing Program. Cynthia was instrumental in launching the careers of Canadian children's literature stars Shane Peacock, Kathy Kacer, Kit Pearson, Jean Little, Sharon McKay and Joan Clark, among many others.

Vikki VanSickle is the acclaimed author of four middle grade novels (Words That Start With B, Love is a Four-Letter Word, Days That End in Y and Summer Days, Starry Nights), all published by Scholastic Canada. After obtaining a Master of Arts in Children’s Literature from the University of British Columbia, Vikki managed the Flying Dragon Bookshop in Toronto for four years, earning the CBA Young Bookseller of the Year Award in 2011. Vikki is an active member in the children’s literature industry. She is a member of Small Print Toronto, has presented at many professional conferences, participated as a panelist on CBC’s Fresh Air, and was recently profiled in Quill & Quire magazine’s children’s issue in March 2013. Currently she works at Penguin Canada in marketing and publicity, which she balances with her own writing career.
