There were terrific reviews for CANSCAIP's first webinar, Navigating and Negotiating Publisher Contracts, presented by Warren Sheffer in March.

"Great webinar. Exactly the kind of information I've been seeking for a long time. A very worthwhile investment of my $25.00."

"Good info to be forearmed with!"

    "Very informative, friendly, useful."

The webinar was recorded, and you can register for $25 for the online video. The video can be viewed whenever you like and as often as you like, and it will be available until the end of April. You'll also receive the sample contract discussed in the webinar, which you can print or save for future use.

Intellectual property lawyer Warren Sheffer offers information and advice, in clear language and in a friendly manner. Both published and unpublished authors and illustrators will find it interesting and useful. The video includes the Q&A at the end of the webinar. The video run time is about an hour.

Warren Sheffer began his legal career at Fasken Martineau LLP and he's been in private practice with Marian Hebb for over a decade. He currently serves as counsel at Artists' Legal Advice Services, and formerly served on the Ontario Bar Association's sections on entertainment, media and communications, and information technology.

    Writing for Children Competition 2017

    Deadline June 30, 2017

CANSCAIP (Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers), in partnership with The Writers' Union of Canada, is pleased to accept entries by unpublished writers for the 20th annual Writing for Children Competition. The deadline for entries is June 30, 2017.

Two winners will be awarded $1,000 for a picture book/early reader entry and for a chapter book/middle grade/young adult entry. Eight additional finalists in these categories will also be selected

CANSCAIP will submit the entries of the winners and finalists to three Canadian children's publishers for consideration. Some winners and finalists in the Writing for Children Competition have had their entries published.

All entrants will receive feedback from the readers who evaluate the entries. This feedback is a unique, useful and potentially important benefit of entering the Writing for Children Competition

A goal of the Writing for Children Competition is to discover, encourage, and promote new writers of children's literature across Canada. The Writers' Union of Canada initiated the Competition in 1996, and in 2014 CANSCAIP took on this initiative.

              TREE AWARD NOMINEES

Shattered Glass  is one of seven linked novels in the SECRETS series (inspired by the SEVEN series). A teen orphan with unexplained burn scars and constant nightmares about fire, seeks the truth about the mother she believes hurt and abandoned her. Teresa Toten is a multiple award-winning, bestselling YA author (The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, Me and the Blondes, etc.) whose work has been translated and sold around the world.

              WHITE PINE AWARD 2017 NOMINEE
Worlds of Ink and Shadow weaves the lives of the young Brontë siblings into the vivid stories they created to escape their strict and isolated upbringing. In this novel, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne are transported into the imaginary worlds of their juvenilia. Lena Coakley, formerly CANSCAIP’s administrative director, had her first picture book published in 2004; her first YA novel, Witchlanders, was published in 2011.

Safety Stars: Players Who Fought to Make the Hard-Hitting Game of Professional Hockey Safer is a  frank look at the dangers of our national game: skates like razors, flying pucks, rock-hard ice. The players profiled have worked to counter hockey’s speed and excitement with measures that make the game safer.  This is the first book by Sue Irwin, a lifetime hockey fan, whose writing has been published in many children’s publications.

              GOLDEN OAK AWARD 2017 NOMINEE
Next Round: A Young Athlete's Journey to Gold  is about Arthur Biyarslanov’s path to competitive boxing. As a child he fled war-torn Chechnya with his family, and in Canada, boxing became his refuge. By the age of 20, the “Chechen Wolf” was winning boxing gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games, and went to the 2016 Olympic Games. The first book by John Spray, a former amateur boxer who has been a private investigator for 40 years.

LOCATION: We meet in Room 224 (2nd floor) at Toronto Public Library Northern District Branch, 40 Orchard View Blvd. (1 block N of Eglinton, W off Yonge).

TRANSIT: TPL Northern District Branch is 1 block N of Eglinton station on the Yonge subway line.

PARKING: The closest parking, at a premium price, is the underground parking at the Yonge-Eglinton Centre, which has an entrance on Orchard View Blvd. The closest Green P parking lot is at 75 Holly St. (1 block E of Yonge, S of Eglinton); others are 3 to 5 blocks N of Eglinton off Yonge, on Erskine, Castlefield and Sherwood.

              • Saturday, November 11, 2017
              • Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute

CANSCAIP's Packaging Your Imagination conference will be on Saturday, November 11.  Save the date and plan to be at PYI!

PYI 2017 returns to Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute in downtown Toronto, an exciting new venue for us last year. Li Ka Shing is a quick walk from two subway stops, across the street from the Pantages Hotel, very close to the Eaton Centre, and has reasonably-priced underground parking.

PYI planning is underway, and you can count on another terrific lineup of speakers and panelists.

              Registration opens in July.

              See you at PYI!
